A Physical Education And Health Teacher Teaches Her Students About The Critical Nature Of Alcohol Addiction Signs
Miss Jackson was a health teacher at the most popular private high school in the state. Even though she had been teaching for only a few years, she had already established a reputation as an educator with teaching methods that encouraged and motivated her students to think and to learn.
For instance, one Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 she addressed the students in her classroom and said the following: "For the next week we are going to learn about some basic alcoholism signs from a general point of view and we are also going to learn about some of the most common signs of alcoholism from a more specific point of view."
"Not every one of these alcoholism warning signs will beyond doubt substantiate that a drinker with a drinking problem is an alcohol dependent individual, but the more signs that a person exhibits, the stronger the probability that he or she is a person who is addicted to alcohol."
Miss Jackson then explained to the the students that each individual would be responsible for examining two alcoholism signs and then presenting his or her findings to the other members in the class via a ten minute oral presentation.
The day after all of the pupils completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a piece of paper with a list of all the alcoholism signs that were presented and discussed in class and in the presentations. Miss Jackson then asked the students in her class to study the list and rank the top six alcoholism signs that were most indicative of alcohol addiction. After around fifteen minutes, Miss Jackson collected the sheets of paper and informed the students in her class that after she goes over the results, she will present her findings the next school day.
Miss Jackson asked the students in her classroom to go over the information she handed out and then to raise their hand if they had any issues, questions, or concerns. Within 30 or 40 seconds, almost everyone in the class raised his or her hand. It was clear to see that the pupils had some issues, questions, or concerns about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism experts. As an illustration, almost every pupil disagreed with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism authorities, that is, "Do you feel exceptionally nauseous when you abstain from drinking?"
Miss Jackson then told the students in her classroom why this answer was the most straightforward sign of alcoholism. She stressed the fact that the basic difference between alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse is the physical dependency that is experienced with alcohol dependency and not with alcohol abuse.
Basically this means that when an alcohol dependent individual suddenly quits drinking, he or she will experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the importance of alcohol withdrawals in the life of the alcohol addicted individual, the pupils started to grasp the main difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism.
A few minutes later the bell rang, indicating that the end of class had arrived. Based on the enthusiasm exhibited by the students when they were leaving the room, Miss Jackson recognized that she had stimulated and motivated the students in her class to stop and think about an essential health issue and social problem that exists in our country.
