A Ninth Grade Student Drinks Excessively With His Friends, Almost Dies From Alcohol Poisoning, And Learns That Learning Something In Class Can Change Your Life

Andy was a high school freshman who typically seemed to be living on the edge. Andy had a risk taking personality and as a rule wanted to do what his older brothers were doing. The main drawback with this was that all three of his brothers were at least 21 years old and were as a result within their legal rights to drive a car or truck and to drink alcohol.

Andy, then again, had a rough time accepting the fact that as a fifteen-year-old person he should not be drinking alcoholic beverages. In fact, conversely, Andy regularly drank with his buddies after school, primarily on the weekends.

One weekend, Andy decided to drive around with some of his older pals. One of his pals was old enough to buy alcohol. After purchasing some wine coolers, beer, and wine, Andy and all of his buddies went to a park and drank for around three hours.

After drinking approximately nine wine coolers, Andy started to feel nauseous and then vomited. When he lost consciousness on the outdoor basketball court, one of his buddies called 911 for assistance. It was fortunate that the call for emergency assistance was made because when his cronies went to the hospital to see Andy, they were notified that Andy had been manifesting alcohol poisoning symptoms. In short, Andy had suffered through an alcohol overdose.

After getting alcohol poisoning treatment, Andy was actually surprised to gather that he had overdosed on alcohol because he "only" had about five or ten alcoholic beverages. When he stated this to the attending physician at the hospital, however, the healthcare practitioner informed Andy that drinking five or ten bottles of beer over a two or three hour period of time could surely be substantially more alcohol than can be metabolized by the body. The healthcare professional further stated how too much alcohol can cause the brain to shut down an individual's breathing and that when this happens, a person can pass away.

This was the first signal to Andy that he was drinking in a risky fashion and that there are effects for such behavior. The healthcare practitioner told Andy that he was a fortunate young man because he almost died from alcohol poisoning the night before.

The healthcare practitioner also had a word with Andy's parents and suggested that they get alcohol counseling for Andy. His parents were relieved that Andy was out of harm's way and informed the physician that they would follow through on getting Andy alcohol rehab.

While talking to his parents, Andy notified them that there must be a special reason why he did not die and that he felt a sense of thankfulness that he was still alive. He also informed his parents that the odd part about the entire drinking situation was that he had learned about alcohol poisoning the past week at school in health class.

At the time, what his health teacher, Mr. Johnson, was articulating didn't seem to make a lot of sense to Andy. Now that he almost died, conversely, he felt that he should have listened more attentively in class and applied what he had learned to his personal life.

Andy notified his parents that he couldn't wait to go back to school and make an apology to Mr. Johnson for not demonstrating more attention to something that was as important as learning about alcohol poisoning.
